Environment and Pollution

Introduction to Pollution
One of the acute problems in our country arising out to increase in population is pollution. Pollution means decrease in quality of good breathable air, drinking water, and cultivable soil. Pollution is caused by introduction of undesirable and harmful elements in our environment. Such undesirable elements may be poisonous, diseases germs, smoke, dust and particles, harmful bacteria, etc.
Pollution can be defined as a change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air water or soil that can affect the health, survival or activities of human in an unwanted way. Pollution is thus direct or indirect change in any component of the biosphere.

Some definitions of pollution are as follows:

1)Pollution is the addition of unwanted substances or effects(pollutants)which adversely alters the natural or man made environment.
2)An undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air, water and soil, that may create a hazard or potential hazard to the health, safety or welfare of living species is called pollution.(K.C.Agrawal)
